Visakhapatnam is where the Eastern Ghats run down to the Bay of Bengal, and the city works that geography hard: a working port and steel town on one side, a beach promenade and forested hills on the other. Most people know it as Vizag, and it rewards a slower visit than its reputation as a stopover suggests.
The coast is the obvious draw — RK Beach for the evening crowd and the submarine museum, Rushikonda for swimming, and Kailasagiri above the city for the view back down over the harbour. Inland is the better surprise. The morning train to Araku Valley climbs through the Ghats past coffee plantations and tunnels cut into the hills, and it is one of the more scenic rail journeys in southern India. Borra Caves sit on the same route.
October to March is the comfortable window, with clear coastal weather and cooler mornings in the valley. April and May are hot and humid; the monsoon arrives in June. Two or three days covers the city and a day trip inland — allow four if you want Araku at an unhurried pace rather than as a single long day.
